Integrating Safety into Workplace Culture

Our management team treats safety as a vital part of practically every department and program in our company, rather than as an isolated function. This not only increases safety performance, but also increases quality, productivity and employee satisfaction, which gives us a competitive advantage in the marketplace.

Safety is Our Frame of Mind

The F.E. Moran Group of Companies safety policy is based on the belief that every working person is entitled to a safe and healthy place to work. We recognize our responsibility for the physical well-being of our employees as established in our core values.

We have created a climate of safety that we enhance with training and awareness. We believe that the attitude and culture of The F.E. Moran Group of Companies (1) provides a healthy, safe working environment for all employees, and (2) abides by all occupational safety and health regulations that pertain to our industry. We attribute the success of our safety program to the fact that safety is an integral part of our corporate culture.

We recognize the vital role that effective accident prevention measures play in an efficiently run project. Our managers and supervisors are responsible and accountable for the implementation of safe work procedures and maintenance of a jobsite free from hazards that might endanger people or property. Support of this objective is a condition of employment.

Incidents Are Preventable and Unusual Events

The F.E. Moran Group of Companies recognizes that incidents should be unusual and preventable events. We recognize that the protection of our employees, property, the public and the environment is essential to the efficient and successful completion of every project we undertake.

Accident prevention is a line management responsibility. That responsibility is shared at every level of our organization, from the president through our craft workforce. Mangers, supervisors and employees are trained to identify and correct unsafe conditions and more importantly, unsafe work practices. Our project management teams administer our Accident Prevention Program at the project level.

The F.E. Moran Group of Companies Safety Programs

Our comprehensive, user-friendly programs are revised annually to maintain compliance. They have been tested and passed by Fortune 1000 customers and government entities such as the Department of Energy (DOE), the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Army Corps of Engineers. We also develop site-specific programs in partnership with our customers to meet or exceed their safety requirements.

Job Hazard Analysis (JHA)
Corresponds to the project schedule, integrates pictures into the safety plan for easy explanation, uses color-coding to identify specific high/low exposures, and pinpoints quality control issues and concerns.

Employee Training
Comprehensive safety priority orientation for all employees; comprehensive OSHA subpart training; OSHA 30-hour training for all project foremen, safety trained supervisors and the majority of our company’s safety leaders.

The Job Hazard Analysis Tool

The F.E. Moran Safety Department believes that a Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) is one of the most powerful and useful tools in our safety arsenal. A JHA is designed as a day-to-day, play-by-play, safety plan in which daily tasks are broken down into small steps and assigned risk exposure values that are used to provide corrective actions. These JHAs are reviewed before the start of the project and daily when the work begins.

We took the stagnant JHA form/process that had been around since the 1970s and simplified, yet super-charged it. Now, the project schedule corresponds to a safety schedule, pictures are integrated with the safety plan for easy explanation, color-coding identifies specific high/low exposures, and quality control issues/concerns are described. As of 2019, all contractors and government divisions, including the Department of Energy (DOE), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), have accepted this innovative JHA.

This process has improved safety and production efficiency. By blending these documents, we reduced the frequency of workers’ compensation and employee events, reduced the severity of claims, mitigated third-party losses, improved productivity and minimized general liability exposures through quality control implementation. Most importantly, we provide our field employees with a tool that is user-friendly yet conveys a sense of 21st Century innovation.
